The Empower Women for Change Food Security project is a volunteer-run initiative that aims to combat food insecurity and enhance the well-being of economically vulnerable women and families, with a particular emphasis on asylum seekers and refugees. The project strives to provide nutritious food, including halal options, and food vouchers to those facing food insecurity, especially those affected by limited access to affordable and healthy food.
Since its informal beginnings in 2015, the Empower Women for Change Food Security Project has made significant strides in addressing food insecurity. In 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the initiative formalised its operations and expanded its reach. We have been able to support our service users who face food insecurity due to various challenges, including limited access to affordable and healthy food, economic vulnerability, Home Office working restrictions, language barriers, limited education, lack of transportation, and the recent high cost of living crisis.
Under the programme, EwfC has facilitated 4 projects so far:
  • the Community Food Support project
  • the Winter Wellbeing project
  • the Poverty Relief project
  • Shaping the future together
The main purpose of all the projects was providing essential and nutritious food parcels, food vouchers and cooked meals. As such, the food security programme has provided more than 8,000 food parcels, 533 food vouchers each worth £20 and 5000 halal meals.
