TLCCP Volunteers: Nahla Abdelhalim

We would like to present one of our amazing The Low Carbon Community Project volunteers Nahla Abdelhalim! Nahla is involved in various TLCCP activities and has been participating in the Cycling Classes.  Nahla’s story is very inspiring and empowering. Even though she just came to Scotland and is facing many changes and difficulties, Nahla is dedicating a lot of her time and strength to helping other people and the environment.

I am from Sudan and I am an asylum seeker. I came to the UK in January 2020 and joined EWfC organisation as a volunteer. I am involved in The Low Carbon Community Project activities. While volunteering I increased my knowledge of carbon emissions and it’s impact to the environment. And in the different workshops and activities I learned how we can contribute to reducing carbon emissions in our homes.

I also joined the cycling programme which was great for me as an asylum seeker. This programme saved me and others from isolation that we all faced during the lockdown. It also helped me to explore Glasgow since it is completely new to me. I met new people, made friends and improved my English. I think that my involvement in this project helped me to feel that I belong to the Scottish society more than before. Now that I learned how to cycle, I aim to cycle every day and in this way contribute to the greener environment.
